This calendar features 12 prints of original collages, all handmade by cut and paste, beginning January 2018 and ending December 2018. Dates of federal holidays are circled. All images were sourced from vintage and contemporary magazines, books, and found paper.
The titles of the collages are bolded in a poem featured on the cover page. The poem (below) tells the story of the artwork.
The wind brought it in (...swoosh)
The light made it stay
She said me too, or was it me three?
Is truth what it looks like,
or is it what you see?
Don't you miss summer break
and breakfast in bed?
Don't you wish the story women were told was about potential instead of lack?
My gran made me feel strong
Your girls make you feel safe
I thought I had to break to wash it all away
but all I needed was the rain
Thursday (Unrequited Love)
This collage was created from shots taken by photojournalists covering the Arab Spring in Egypt in 2011. Writers Patrick and Daniel Lazour are developing a musical entitled "We Live in Cairo" about the protests in Cairo that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak. This piece was put this together for their presentation in New York City at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre festival.
